Dans les rivières très polluées, mais en présence d'un courant suffisant, du printemps à l'automne, des quantités impressionnantes d'oeufs peuvent être pondues par le chironomes. Sur cette section, les sédiments y étaient constitués principalement des rejets chroniques d'une papeterie à la station d'épuration de capacité insuffisante et dysfonctionnant, offrant un habitat idéal au chironome plumeux, dont des milliards de larves creusent des galeries où ils se nourrissent. Cette larve est l'un des rares organismes invertébrés (avec une sangsue et des tubifex) à survivre dans les sédiments très chargés en matière organique en décomposition).
