Italiano: Figura dei misteri di Mitra, mitreo di Dura-Europos, Syria
English: Depiction of the figure on the right (north) side of the arcosolium at the Mithraeum of Dura-Europos, Syria (CIMRM 44.b). The figure is originally sketched (outline only) in red. Similar to the figure on the left side of the arcosolium; in Palmyrene costume, in his right hand he holds a staff, in the left a scroll. In contrast to Cumont, who supposed that this was a depiction of the mythical Ostanes (and that the other figure depicted "Zoroaster"), Rostovtzeff and E.D. Francis rationally identify the figure as a member of the mithraeum's Palmyrene congregation.
Petsa III secolo d. C.
Ginkuhaan Photo of 2nd century drawing. Photo first published in 1934 (Cumont, ILN 1934, fig. 9), and subsequently by Du Mesnil (GRA, 1935, fig. 13), Bidez and Cumont (Les Mages I, 1939, plate 2) and Rostovtzeff (Report, plate XVII). Recent monographs that include it is Merkelbach's Mithras (1982, p. 276, fig. 16a). A color version by E.D. Francis may be found in Mithraic Studies, vol. II, plate 25 [1975]).
